> Maintaining Your Computer
Regular maintenance will help prevent problems and
avoid the loss of your data.
Tasks that you should perform:
1) Check the condition
of your computer’s hard drive. Use
the “ScanDisk” program built into Windows. This task
should be done once or twice a month.
2) Get rid of old files
that you no longer need. Use the “Disk
Cleanup” program in Windows. Do this after running Scan Disk.
This task frees up space on the drive.
3) Use the “Disk Defragmenter” program
in Windows to make your files unfragmented. Run this program after
the tasks 1
and 2.
SCANDISK – Close all open programs. Click the “Start” button,
then click Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools, and last,
ScanDisk. Choose 1) “Thorough” option and 2) “Automatically
Fix Errors”. Then click Start. This may take up to an hour,
depending on the size of the hard drive. If you have a second hard
drive, do the same for that one when the first is finished.
DISK CLEANUP – Close all open programs. Click the “Start” button,
then Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools, and last Disk
Cleanup. Click in the selection boxes for any categories where disk
memory is used. Click Start, and after agreeing to the warning, it
will delete unnecessary files.
DISK DEFRAGMENTER – Close all open programs. Click the “Start” button,
then Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools, and last Disk
Defragmenter. Select the C-drive and click Start. You can click on
Details on the next window if you want to watch the operation of
the program. When you get the “completed” message, close
the window.
You should not try to do any other work on the computer while these
programs are running. While in theory you could use it, it is better
and faster not to do so.
If you have problems with
any of these programs being interrupted by something running on
the computer, you should run them in “Safe
Mode”. To enter safe mode, hold down a key while the computer
boots up. For Windows 95, hold down the F8 key. For Windows 98, hold
the left Ctrl key. When you are through with the maintenance, reboot
the computer and it will start in Normal mode.
